The Renowned Austrian Sweet Tooth
I have never eaten anything Austrian before, so I initially came to this territory without any preconceptions about Austrian gastronomic delights. Having tasted a few of Austrian fares by now, though, I could say I was pleasantly surprised at how well Austrian food has skated through my palate.
Just like with other European treats, the Austrian gastronomic offering will not be complete without sweet delights. Austrians are not only distinguished for their sweet wines; they are also known for their choice for sweets.
The Austrian passion for anything sweet takes off with preserves and crisp rolls in the morning. If the body
asks for more in between meals, chocolates and sweetened coffee are prepared. Then, after every meal, the gracious Austrian host will convince you to join him in indulging on rich, exquisite, sweet temptations. If you have gained the Austrian palate, you will even add a generous dollop of schlagobers (sweetened whipped cream) without reservation.
If I have stirred your appetite by now, then I would like to share with you my five favorite after meal delights. I must tip you though: these temptations are lovely!
1.Heisse Schokolade -- in English, this is delectable hot chocolate, best readied with schlag (whipped cream).
2.Dobusch Torte is a luscious layered cake provided with chocolate frosting and caramel glaze.
3.Marzipan is a sweetened almond paste prepared sometimes with chocolate.
4.Cheese Danish is a wafer-thin strudel pastry filled with sweet cheese and raisins.
5.Vanillekipferl – this sweet delight is served close to the Christmas season. It is made like a crescent and it is a vanilla bean and almond biscuit rolled in confectioner's sugar.
